Job Description:

Reports to: VP Credit and Risk, CEO or COO
Purpose:

  • Directly contribute to delivering the Company’s revenue objectives through the development and execution of home financing underwriting policies that meet corporate objectives, regulatory requirements and established and agreed risk tolerances. Managing the implementation, process, monitoring and assessment of underwriting risk and managing the Collections process to minimise non-performing loans and credit losses

Key Accountabilities   
Possible Goals, Targets & Standards

  • To supervise and manage the underwriting team and all underwriting recommendations, within agreed policies pertaining to overall standards, turnaround time, credit quality, portfolio mix and asset classes
  • To manage all underwriting decisions of the business, within agreed policies pertaining to turnaround time, credit quality, overall standards, portfolio mix and asset classes
  • To conduct periodic review, in line with company policies, of portfolios, policies and processes and suggest necessary amendments, improvements and measures to the management in a timely manner to avoid credit losses
  • To manage credit delinquencies and supervise the Collections team in order to minimisminimise non-performing loans within policy limits
  • To maintain Underwriting Submission Summary, prepare daily, weekly, monthly underwriting reports
  • To distribute approval notifications and update any required reporting and systems data
  • To monitor and distribute to all staff changes in guidelines, practices, policies and procedures and other relevant information
  • To work with management to develop and improve effective loan underwriting and risk mitigation policies and mechanisms to measure and monitor the company’s risk exposure.
  • To prepare and deliver performance appraisal and evaluation for all direct reports of underwriting personnel
  • To assist related groups in new product development, review new product recommendations and determine risk levels and appropriate related underwriting guidelines for the products
  • To recruit, coach, train and develop underwriting personnel, assist in training other related areas such as loan processing, loan closing, appraisal, quality control, etc, in accordance with department and business needs.
  • To keep abreast of and implement required adjustments to credit policy as related to government regulations and policies
  • To review current mortgage underwriting reporting processes and highlight gaps and weaknesses in current coverage, measurement and/or methodologies
  • To approve exceptions to existing standards on a case by case basis, within approved delegations of authority
  • To develop and automate adjustments to the underwriting process as applicable
  • To coordinates with others to develop users manuals for underwriting 
  • To assist team members with the transition, integration and development of underwriting reporting.
  • To interface with support suppliers, such as, appraisers, attorneys, credit reporting providers, etc, in order to ensure quality and standards of service providers are in compliance with the Company’s defined policies and procedures
  • To assist with determining what mortgage risk metrics to track, how they are measured, and the method in which data is stored and reported
  • To analyze and develop contingency planning for the underwriting process during systems failures
  • To respond to questions or exceptions reported from the Quality Control group and the Origination team, in order to ensure turnaround time for re-work cases is met
  • To identify, document, and ensure communication & mitigation of key risks


Job Requirements:

Qualification & Experience Prerequisites
Minimum Education / Qualifications

  • Four (4) or more years relevant work experience in credit risk management or mortgage risk management
  • Minimum one (1) year direct residential loan underwriting experience
  • Post-graduate Degree
  • Desirable Education / Qualifications
  • CPA or MBA in business, finance, economics or statics a plus
  • Atleast 1 year underwriting experience of Sharia’a compliant finance products
  • Formal Bank Credit Training plus
  • Residential mortgage banking  experience a plus
  • Language skills required
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Similar skills in Arabic will be a strong preference
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Experience building scorecards and reports using MS Access a plus

  • Ability to not only demonstrate a mastery of underwriting, but the ability to train, coach and mentor junior level underwriting personnel
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Proven leaderships and ability to drive improvement and change
  • Exceptional organizational, analytical and research skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of automated underwriting systems a plus
  • Demonstrated  knowledge of industry and market standards and trends.
